The Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023 replaced the Code of Criminal Procedure, 1973. It received Presidential assent on 25 December 2023 and came into force on 1 July 2024.

The Sanhita contains 39 chapters and 531 sections and consolidates and amends the law relating to criminal procedure. It covers important procedural aspects such as investigation, inquiry and trial of offences, subject to applicable special or local laws.
